High Definition
- What do I need to receive it?
You will need either a HD Ready or Full HD television…
HD Ready - A HDTV set capable
of accepting HD signals (may not be able to display at full resolution
1920x1080)
Full HD - HDTV set capable of accepting HD signals and able to display
full resolution at 1920x1080
What kind of receiver will I need to receive
a high definition picture?
1. Sky HD.
A separate Sky receiver that provides High Definition content from up
to 25 channels on a subscription service. A satellite dish is required
to receive this service
2. Freesat. A separate or in some cases a built in receiver that provides
free of charge HD content from the BBC and ITV with more promised in
the future. A satellite dish is required to receive this service
3. Cable. Supplied direct from various cable companies.
How will these receivers connect to the
TV?
Some Sky HD receivers come with both HDMI and
Component outputs, although the latest models are HDMI only, Freesat
receivers connect via HDMI or component.
HDMI is recommended as the best means of connecting to an HD display.
The HDMI interface is the uncompressed, all-digital, global connectivity
standard that delivers true HD quality for consumer electronics and
PC products via a single cable. HDMI technology was specifically designed
to meet the needs of today’s – and tomorrow’s – HD entertainment systems.
It transmits digital video, multi-channel surround sound, and advanced
control data through a single cable, replacing up to eleven older cables
with a single connection. Its simplicity is matched only by its extraordinary
performance. High-bandwidth, all-digital, and never compressed, HDMI
provides the highest possible signal quality.
Is
the HD dish set up the same as SKY+?
The dish alignment and cable requirements for
a Sky HD box are exactly the same as Sky+.
For an existing Sky+ customer the Sky+ box and Sky HD box simply need
to be swapped over.
A Sky box customer will need a Quad LNB and second feed to the set top
box.
What
dish will I require for Freesat?
If you already have Sky and want to change to
Freesat, in most cases your original Sky dish will suit.
At
present a single LNB is required but a Quad LNB will be required if
Freesat+ (twin tuner PVR) is used.
What is Blu-ray?
Blu-ray also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the
name of the new generation optical disc format.
Developed to enable playback of high-definition video (HD), as well
as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times
the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on
a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity
combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs will offer
consumers an unprecedented HD experience.
